Admiral Byrd's polar ship, "The City of New York", is moored in the lagoon near Twenty-third Street.
Built in Norway, this icebreaker played an important role in Admiral Byrd's successful journey to the South Pole.

Four crew members who made the voyage are still aboard the ship.
