The Citizens' Initiatives Pavilion, more commonly known as the Lighthouse, is the space in the Expo that welcomes civil society organisations. This is the first opportunity for non-governmental organisations to be responsible for the content and design of a pavilion at an international exhibition. It represents local groups, both Spanish and from the five continents, environmental, social and cultural associations, as well as those working in cooperation and development. The Lighthouse is structured around eight main themes in the Expo, all of which are signals that citizen movements wish to send to society as a whole. The Lighthouse also offers a space for relaxation where you can enjoy a good cup of fair trade coffee or tea and consult the pavilion's website on a dozen computers. In addition, a calendar of activities has been organised under the name of 'Lighthouse weeks' to multiply the capacity to spread its message (see pages 224 and 225). Each of the 12 weeks of this initiative is devoted to a specific topic.
