In the Austrian pavilion, the style of Josef Hoffmann, the leader of Austrian art, is clearly distinguished from the style of Peter Behrens, the leader of German art, whose presence at the Austrian exhibition opens up interesting perspectives on Austro-German sympathies. Austrian genius, as it appears in the works of the Wiener Wersktàtte, may not be as rigorously disciplined as German genius; but it seems to us to be better endowed with visual delight and delicate fantasy, in which something of Schumann's carnival music comes through.
