A thousand years ago, the Viking Bjarni Herjolfsson set out from Norway and was the first European to reach North America. This and many other great deeds are recalled in the Great Norwegian Explorers exhibition. The exhibition presents both the ships and equipment used by the brave Vikings who crossed the North Atlantic and the Norwegian pioneers who crossed the North-East and North-West passages and conquered the two poles. Thor Heyerdahl's Ra and Kon-Tiki odysseys proved that man was able to cross the oceans early on to colonise distant lands.
The exhibition reveals one of the secrets of Norwegian success. The explorers used nature and built flexible boats.
