The opening of the Army Museum (Group XX, Army and Sea Section) took place on Thursday 26 May.
The Army Museum, a veritable panopticum of our national history, was well suited to awaken in the hearts of the masses a pride that had been asleep for too long, by reminding them of or teaching them about an immense heroic past of which any other people would have been proud long ago.
The application of a new conception, this Exhibition was truly the setting in pages of the most beautiful phases of our military glory, the apotheosis of our old and solid warlike reputation.
The commission, having been constituted only ten months before, had to be content with going back to the Spanish domination, but, on the other hand, it knew admirably how to develop the period from 1830 to our days. It has endeavoured to exhume and classify the centuries-old memories jealously preserved in the Belgian families of ancient lineage; this is what made this Section so attractive and what made it so picturesque. All the great names so intimately linked to the development of the Belgian people through the ages were represented.
