China - Expo Paris 1889

China at the Exhibition Expo Paris 1889

Despite the spread of Buddhism, China retained its own architecture.

Brick and wood are the building materials used throughout the Middle Kingdom.

The Celestials believe that a building that has lasted as long as the generation that built it has fulfilled its purpose, and they do not feel the need to resort to stone. Mr. Paleologue has established that the formula of Chinese art is the t'ing, i.e. the curved roof, curved in the middle and resting on short columns.

It looks like a tent raised at the corners by spikes.
